About Julie and the Goldstein Personality and Learning Profile

I am a licensed clinical social worker with over seventeen years experience working with children and families both as a teacher and as a clinical social worker.   Highlights early in my career include teaching students in inner city Los Angeles, working in the South Bronx as a psychotherapist for adults and children, and acting as the mental health consultant to Teach for America's New York City corps members.  As a native of Farmington, I am proud to have worked for Avon Public Schools and in CREC's Montessori Magnet School.  In my role as school social worker at H.W. Porter School in Columbia, CT, I am in charge of the development and  implementation of  SRBI/Behavior, a federal initiative.  I am also the 504 Coordinator, a member of the Juvenile Review Board, and National Junior Honor Society Adviser, and Field Work Instructor for Fordham University.

One of the things I have noticed in many of the situations where a child is struggling has to do with how he or she is perceived by adults.   Teachers care about their students, but sometimes they fall into a trap of linking everything they see in child with his or her circumstances.  Probably the easiest example to give is when students are overactive and have trouble focusing.  It seems like the possibility that they have ADHD becomes the focal point and is connected with every issue the child experiences.   An opposite example would be the quiet, earnest student- their teachers may never be able to tap into the child's interests and creativity, simply because they aren't aware.  These traps happen naturally; they are not necessarily anyone's fault.  But they do result in a teacher- student relationship in which the teacher does not truly know or understand the child and therefore cannot reach the child as fully as they would otherwise.

Your child's teacher will thank you for helping them to know, understand and appreciate your child.  Your child will feel more connected to the teacher, which result in a higher sense of security, confidence and ability to do his or her best.  Best of all, as a parent, you will feel enlightened, validated and confident about your knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of your child.
